We have a card processor from way back when our cart was installed in 2016 but it now seems to fail to function for some, not all, customers. We’re looking to install one that will overcome this problem but it must be standalone and not associated to any one financial institution so that we can process payment manually at our end. Our other concern is what the procedure should be so as not to cause problems with our cart’s function.

Thank you, I will pursue this but by chance do you know when it was developed as perhaps it’s the one we are using?

The offline route is the right call: add a payment method under Administration > Payment methods with the processor set to “None”. Orders get placed as normal and you collect the money yourself, no gateway involved. It has been in CS-Cart for years and depends on nothing external.
Worth noting though: “fails for some customers but not all” on a 2016 processor is almost never CS-Cart itself, it is the gateway side, usually 3-D Secure 2 / SCA now being enforced by some banks. Offline fixes the immediate problem; automated cards would need a current gateway, not a store change.
Two cautions: don’t collect or store full card numbers by email/phone unless you are PCI DSS compliant, and take a backup plus test one real checkout before going live.
