I installed newest version and tried the back up database which works fine but does not show up in admin area to restore from or anything, I can see the files in the database/backup area stored but not showing up visually in admin area, I set var to 777 and all files within as well
This is a known bug (#543 in the Bug Tracker) which will be fixed in the next release. If you wish to patch this yourself, the fix is posted in the Bug Tracker:
