I would like to figure out how this can be done.



I want to run a promo on my site where if a user buys a Motorcycle helmet I will then automatically add a t-shirt to their shopping cart to go with their helmet.



can that be done? or at least give them an option to add a t-shirt to their cart for free if a helmet is already in their cart?

You could do it by adding a promotion, admin → addons → promotions (tick box and save changes). The section can be accessed just under discounts and coupons, “promotions”.
