#182666 Category Structure

Posted by eric_miller on 29 April 2014 - 09:42 PM in SEO

To give this real life context. One of our big products are seats. We sell them for multiple industries that have little product crossover, so creating 1 category of “seats” wouldn’t be appropriate. Or at least as far as I know it wouldn’t be… maybe the best way is to handle that with a filter? I guess thats why I'm reaching out to the CS-Cart community.

So for example, I started building it out like so:

Tractors

-Seats
—Seat Covers

Lawn care
-Seats

Construction equipment

-Seats

Semi

-Seats
—Seat Covers

I'm not sure of the best way to give a unique name to to our simple categories (such as “seats”) in each industry. This is only one example of category crossover that doesn’t share product crossover.
Thats why I’m wondering if I’m supposed to be doing something like “Tractors > Seats > Seat Covers” as a single category (This is how OpenCart has it set up in a demo), or nested as the above example. I'm also confused about if this needs to be done in the category name, or if it just needs to be a uneque SEF URL in the add-ons tab.

Thanks raff! I don't think I would have ever thought to look there.

#182555 Category Structure

Posted by eric_miller on 28 April 2014 - 09:10 PM in SEO

I've gone through all the articles I can find about structuring the categories so they don’t append -en-# to the SEO name, but I'm still not sure about the best practice for structuring my categories.

The site I’m setting up is similar to how a clothing site would have duplicate categories. Only difference is its parts, not pants. This is the structure I’m currently using. e.g.

+ Industry 1
-+ Product cat 1
-+ Product cat 2
--+Product sub cat 1
--+Product sub cat 2
--+Product sub cat 3
-+ Product cat 3

+ Industry 2
-+ Product cat 1
-+ Product cat 2
--+Product sub cat 1
--+Product sub cat 2
--+Product sub cat 3
-+ Product cat 3

From what I’ve read it looks like I should be doing something like this…

+ Industry 1 > Product cat 1
+ Industry 1 > Product cat 2 > Product sub cat 1
+ Industry 1 > Product cat 2 > Product sub cat 2
+ Industry 1 > Product cat 2 > Product sub cat 3
+ Industry 1 > Product cat 3

+ Industry 2 > Product cat 1
+ Industry 2 > Product cat 2 > Product sub cat 1
+ Industry 2 > Product cat 2 > Product sub cat 2
+ Industry 2 > Product cat 2 > Product sub cat 3
+ Industry 2 > Product cat 3

Does this need to be done in the root category and linked up someplace else for menus? Does this only need to be applied for SEO name field?

I'd greatly appreciate any feedback.

I’ve been referring mostly to the links below. I have been keeping the drill down as logical as possible, I think… I’m sure it has room for improvement.

#182550 Change Code To Sku

Posted by eric_miller on 28 April 2014 - 08:19 PM in Hints & Modifications

I would like to modify the product input field "CODE" to say something more fitting to information that's being displayed... "SKU" or "Part Number" for example.

I assume its just a string resource, but I haven't been able to find any info about changing it.

Thanks

#182545 .gitignore

Posted by eric_miller on 28 April 2014 - 07:15 PM in General Questions

I've done a bit of looking and I can't seem to find a 'template' for a CS-Cart .gitignore file. The one that stand out as obvious to exclude is config.local.php. Does anyone have any best practice advice for this?

Thanks

#180886 Product Features

Posted by eric_miller on 03 April 2014 - 02:10 PM in Configuration

That is the solution I found, but as I mentioned its a total hack, its confusing and not usability friendly. It would be nice (and best) if I could edit the current features tab to contain an html block.

What I ended up doing is disabeling the default features tab and creating a new product tab named 'Features' with an HTML block. However, now it's not visable in the features area and the field for features is gone while editing the product. I can add info to it through 'block settings' link in the Product tabs area of the product editor. This is far from intuitive and will become a large pain point when less technical staff take on roles of adding/editing content.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something or not here. When I set up the product features I added one that *I thought* would allow me to add a bulleted list of features as most of our products will have features that aren't generic accross all products. I've tried using both the 'Text' options, but that gives no ability for formatting, not even line breaks.

What am I missing? Does the native Features really not allow more options?

Thanks

#180576 Store Setup - Share Products

Posted by eric_miller on 31 March 2014 - 07:20 PM in General Questions

I am setting up 3 stores and some of the products will be available through the other stores. I'm looking at the setting when adding a new store under "copy existing store configuration" the setting "Share products".
Will that share all the products? Just make those products accessable...?
Do I need to select "Share products" to share across stores or can I change this in the product data later?

Thanks in advance
