Product Image Import -- Duplicate

We are trying to update some alt tags for the images in our site. When using this interface:

We end up with duplicate images for the products we're ending up with duplicate images. Is there any way to replace these images rather than duplicating them?

I assume you are importing "additional images" if so then check this box to delete previous
