Is it possible with some easy modification to make brands / manufacturers be selected as feature type "multiple" in admin product details > features. I want to assign two brands to single product.

Generally, no. But you can create unlimited amount of the features with the Brand/Manufacturer type
Yea but that is not what I need.
If you assign "color" feature type checkbox multiple, from product details page set to "white" and "black" pills, then in front end filter you will find this product either selecting white or black.
Now if instead of of type checkbox multiple I would use brand and it had a way to select multiple brands from product details page, besides all mentioned above I would also had links to products by color like
domain.com/white.html
domain.com/black.html
I am afraid, it is not possible
