Canonical Pagination Not Working Correctly Please Help

Hi all

Just looking at doing some on site SEO and have noticed that the canonical url doesn;t work as intended I dont think for pagination. If I am on page 2 of /category1/ it shows

<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.domain.co.uk/category/page-2/" />

Should the canonical ref not have been

<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.domain.co.uk/category/" />

According to google it works correctly since prev and next attributes are also used

This doesn't seem correct though....annoyingly I have Google ranking for instance page 2 with 4 products on it over page 1 with 24 product on it as the canonical is telling Google I prefer that page to be ranked.
