Responsive Control Panel

Another thing that is super important.

please consider make the control panel RESPONSIVE to improve the user experience from mobile devices.

You wish to much :stuck_out_tongue:

Please don’t. If you want addon prices to stay low then don’t juggle the ui on the backhand like is done on the front end. Stability of the backhand in v4 has gone a long way in keeping prices flat.

huh? you're against the responsive design in the CP?

you must be kidding.

Tony provided you with arguments what restyling of Admin area can lead to.

Each add-on developer will have to update all his add-ons, and as a result prices will be higher. Moreover some developers can stop maintaining their add-ons for a newer version.

Then your product never will have responsive control panel because developers will have to update their addons?

wow! let's stay forever without responsive design in the control panel, that way the addons will be **cheap** forever, and they don't have to update anything never.

Your future is "promising"! competitors and customers must be wrong!

Thanks for the confirmation!

Very disappointed with that attitude and the argument. really. 3rd party addons must be improved permanently. the most important must be the main software and the customers.

First time I heard responsive design is something to avoid. amazing.

There are really two types of actions in the admin area.

1) Quick actions like changing order status, process a payment/shipping or confirming something.

2) Viewing primarily tabular (or form) data that summarizes things like orders, sales, products, categories, etc.

For #1, a mobile control panel would be fine and some developer could create a mobile app that used the API to accomplish this quite reasonably if the market was there to support the development cost.

For the vast majority of administrative actions in #2 and all the other stuff that goes on in an administrative environment, a desktop type layout is much more useful and effective. A mobile screen/method (in my opinion) would be cumbersome and start to drop functionality for ease of display.

And yes, with a very small market like cs-cart, updating 10-20 addons to conform to new (and every changing) css styling is a big deal because in reality, most merchants are not willing to pay for it. They want things, but they aren't willing to support them with their wallets. And this type of change doesn't add any functionality nor capability to the admin environment.

There is nothing that prevents any developer from creating a responsive admin area and overwriting the existing admin pages with responsive ones. Again, if there was a real market demand then someone would step up and do so.

We'd be happy to do something for #1 above iff there were a market for it. Like other merchants, we make investments with the goal of making a profit. So when people are not willing to pay for something, it doesn't make a lot of sense to invest in it.

For some specific things it would be useful to have mobile / responsive layout. Like checking new orders or set user permissions. (mostly urgent things)

But for 99% of all actions we will exclusively use desktop. I'd rather have the admin panel make more sense instead, so that we can have more effective workflow and better addon permissions.

Maybe i'm wrong, but on a tablet the normal layout already works fine. And would you really manage your store from a phone? Because I can't imagine doing that (even so, there's always Twigmo which offers a mobile admin area).

Probably there is a true need to do sometime something from the phone. It’s something that should be planned for future.

Some systems have it. But true managment can’t be performed with a phone.

Nice idea for future development.

There are some small things that would be great to be improved for mobile. It happens that I urgently need to log into admin panel from mobile.
In Such case the floating notifications (for new update and cache) are really annoying, because these are responsive and keep moving as you zoom in. Its very hard to get rid of the notifications and they get into the way of clicking on anything else.
It would help a lot to disable this for mobile. This tweak should not be hard to implement.

And it would be quite useful to have a mobile overview of waiting orders. This should also be simple to do.

I've been testing trying to create / edit some product from my phone and is very difficult.

don't want to make it responsive? fine, but at least redesign the admin panel creating a bigger buttons with more space between elements would improve the user experience, adding html 5 uploader would be also very helpful.

doesn't work "fine" from mobile devices. (at least your tablet, have a lot of inches..)(with a lot of patience) from the phone doing something the experience is awful.

if you "can't imagine" doing something from your phone, seriously, many people use their smartphones to do many things.

and Twigmo?? no thanks.

I don't see getting much support with making the admin responsive. It would add a lot of time and cost to the addon developers and I just don't see that many people using it. I use the piss out of my phone, but adding products and doing stuff like that, I highly doubt I'd ever do that. Checking orders and stuff, now that would be nice.

What about a mobile app though? Then the addon developers could choose if they want to code for the app or not. A person could use this app to manage their store, but for the addons that aren't compatible, they would have to use a normal desktop.

Twigmo was doing a mobile admin a while back http://forum.cs-cart.com/topic/19976-iphone-app-for-store-owners/I don't use Twigmo, so I'm not sure if this is included or not. I don't see anything on the site about it though.

Anyways, just a thought. Seems like an app would meet the requirements of someone that wants a mobile admin, but still would keep the costs down for the developers.

Thanks,

Brandon

I take a little drive again yesterday testing Twigmo, (Paid / Montly "service")(after couple years)..

And my opinion doesn't changed too much. is still very basic, until looks completely useless.

with the admin app is not possible even create a new product, add new picture to a product, manage options. nothing. awful paid service. unbelievable there are people recommended this. after few minutes has been deleted.

There are always people who doesn't need to do anything on smartphones. like my grandpa. he's happy without smartphones. he don't need it. but my grandma have smartphone and use it a lot..

I also tried Twigmo last week and was actually very impressed. It's a super easy and fast way of making your store mobile friendly and to create an app for your customers.

Don't forget that is it's main purpose. It's main purpose is not a mobile admin center, although I have to say I'm impressed by the mobile admin as well. The order overview works very well and I can actually see my team using the app while walking through the warehouse.

As you can see from the responses here, nobody except for you can imagine managing his store (adding products, features, etc) with a phone. So I don't think this will ever be supported.

Great conclusion! 5 replies against responsive CP, wow amazing, too many people against use mobile devices!

because yes, people who use phones must be wrong. absolutely!

*mode ironic off*

Rafass, I don't think anyone is "against" a responsive CP, I just think most people feel that it's not practical. There are so many rows ,fields and options to display that accomplishing this in a "responsive" design isn't a realistic solution. This is a function that is much more suitable through a native or hybrid application. I haven't messed with Twigmo in a long time, since I either use my tablet or my PC to manage my store, but if you really want to have a more comprehensive Mobile Admin App you surely aren't going about it the right way. Put it in the ideas section and try to gain support in the forum for the idea in a more constructive way instead of being belligerent.
